Vocal Cord Damage From Negligent ENT Treatment
Our vocal cords are responsible for delivering our voice. They are essentially ligaments which stretch from the front to the back of the larynx. When we speak or sing the cords are put in to a state of tension so that the breath is partially obstructed; they vibrate and produce sounds, usually unique to each person. Any damage to the vocal cords can cause a range of difficulties such as:
• Hoarseness
• Noisy breathing
• Loss of vocal pitch
• Inability to speak loudly, or at all
• Inability to sing loudly, or at all
• The need to take frequent breaths while talking
• Coughing or choking while eating or drinking
• Loss of gag reflex
Vocal cord damage can occur as a result of various issues such as a stroke, a neck or chest injury, certain infections and some neurological conditions, but it can also happen as a result of problems during any kind of facial, nasal or throat surgery.
Take for example the case of a woman from Uxbridge who had a family history of thyroid cancer. When doctors decided to operate to remove her thyroid gland they did not explain to her the risks that went with the surgery, or the other non-surgical options open to them. During the operation the woman sustained injury to her laryngeal nerves leaving her unable to speak, unable to breathe properly and hence unable to maintain a quality of life. During the case it was alleged that if she had been properly advised by the doctors she could have avoided the surgery entirely, and not been left with permanent disabilities; she received compensation of over £100,000.
If you or someone you care for has suffered as a result of damage to their vocal cords during surgery, then you could well be eligible to make a claim for compensation. Your voice is a big part of your identity and struggling to speak, or not being able to speak at all can make life very challenging indeed. Contact one of our friendly and experienced solicitors today and they will listen to your story and advise you as to whether a claim for compensation is the right approach.
