Negligent Hysterectomy Surgery
A hysterectomy is a serious medical operation which involves removing a woman’s womb. It is only usually performed if all other less-invasive techniques have been exhausted, and due to the complications around fertility, childbirth and menopause, those most likely to undergo a hysterectomy are women aged between 40 and 50.
The operation can be necessary for a range of issues including the development of fibroid tumours within the womb, excessive bleeding during menstruation, or in some cases when cervical cancer or cancer of the womb has been detected.
Operations such as hysterectomies are incredibly sensitive and require highly experienced surgeons and surgical teams. The most common risks associated with hysterectomies concern damage to the bladder or bowel, damage to the ureter, the development of an infection or the administering of unsuitable medication which can in turn have devastating consequences.
One example is a lady from Peterborough who was left with unsightly scarring, constant abdominal pain and depression following a hysterectomy operation. During the surgery both of her ureters were damaged and while the surgeons noticed their mistake and subsequently attempted to repair the damage in another operation, she was left with on-going urinary tract infections and her bladder became unstable. She later received over £40,000 in compensation. While this has not resolved her pain, it has enabled her to rebuild her life and move forward.
Another case worthy of noting is that of the 50-year-old woman who, after years of suffering with heavy periods, was referred to hospital by her GP. She developed an infection after her first treatment and was referred back to the hospital to undergo a total abdominal hysterectomy. During this operation she suffered damage to her bowel and bladder which in turn led to issues with her kidneys. As a result of these mistakes she became totally incapacitated and will have to take a range of medications for the rest of her life. She took legal advice and raised a claim for negligence and subsequently received over £600,000 in compensation.
If you or someone you care for has suffered as a result of a negligent hysterectomy you could be eligible for compensation.
